Bigger and more versatile than any Mini before it, the all-new 2017 Mini Cooper Countryman is a stylish and comfortable subcompact crossover. The Cooper Countryman’s standard turbocharged three-cylinder engine struggles to move this Mini, but the sportier Cooper S improves acceleration with a more powerful turbocharged four-cylinder. While the Countryman’s cargo hold is smaller than others in the class, the extra coin spent on a Mini does net buyers a cabin that’s filled with high-quality materials and sufficient passenger space and the most refined chassis in its class.

What's New for 2017?

The new Countryman receives an entirely new chassis that is shared with the wagon-like Mini Cooper Clubman and the BMW X1. The redesign increased the Countryman’s length by 7.8 inches and wheelbase by 2.9 inches, which improved interior space and cargo volume. The Cooper’s standard 1.6-liter inline-four has been replaced by a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-three, while the sportier Cooper S adopts a new, more powerful turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four. An all-wheel-drive system, called All4, is optional.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Countryman is motivated by a standard 134-hp 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder or an optional 189-hp 2.0-liter turbo inline-four. The base engine simply lacks the power to move the Countryman’s 3300-plus pounds. Its narrow powerband, which peaks at 5000 rpm, means regular swapping of the standard six-speed manual transmission’s cogs is required to make the most of the available power. The increased capability of the Cooper S model's 2.0-liter inline-four significantly improved zero-to-60-mph times, slashing off more than two seconds from the lesser version's time. Optional automatic transmissions have either six or eight speeds, depending on the model. Rigid and refined, the Countryman’s chassis provides a feeling of security generally found in pricier vehicles. Unlike other Mini models, the Countryman never feels light or tossable from behind the wheel. It's both quiet and refined, with steering that’s well weighted and communicative.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Although the Countryman comes standard with a 6.5-inch screen for its infotainment system, an 8.8-inch touchscreen unit with navigation is available as part of the Technology package. Controlled by touch inputs, a control knob, or voice commands, the system boasts logical menu structures and quality graphics. The Countryman comes with most modern connectivity options, but the omission of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is cause for a demerit.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Countryman’s interior is typically Mini in design, including gimmicky elements such as an infotainment system set in a large circular housing in the center of the dash and toggle switches for controlling items such as the ignition and overhead lights. If you can get past the kitschy design, there’s a lot to like about the Countryman’s cabin, which is assembled from high-quality materials and offers adequate passenger space. The Countryman comes well equipped, with a number of standard features that competitors charge extra for, including dual-zone automatic climate-control and a proximity key with push-button start. A number of storage nooks provide the Countryman with sufficient room for stashing smaller items; however, the cargo area offers less space than some smaller competitors.
